Audi A4 model details and changes

Full details of the new Audi A4 2008 model have been released by Audi Ingolstadt in their full press kit. If the car seems very similar at first look, look again and you’ll notice all the subtle changes and find the design very different from the 2007 model. It is longer, wider and more aggressive. One of the immediately apparent detail in the photos and the video is an optional row of 14 white LED lights in each headlamp for daytime driving.

The new 2008 A4 is built on the Audi’s new Modular Longitudinal Platform (MLP) which made its debut on the Audi A5 at Geneva. This new B8 chassis aids in a better weight distribution by allowing the powertrain to be located behind the front axle, the clutch (or torque converter) and the differential have been interchanged helping the front axle to be moved forward by 154mm thereby significantly reducing the front overhang. With a reduced aerodynamic drag coefficient of cD=0.27 new Audi A4 cuts the wind better.

The total length of the car went up to 4703mm compared to a 4586mm of 2007 model. With the shortened front overhang, longer bonnet and wheelbase increased by 46mm, the new a4 has a much more sportier stance. According to Audi the interior is longer by 20mm with a 36mm increase in the rear passenger legroom. Despite the increased dimensions the new car’s body weighs 10% less and this has been achieved by the use of ultra-high-strength steel grades.

A total of 5 engines (2 petrols and 3 diesels) will be offered with three gearboxes to choose from: a 6-speed Manual gearbox, a Tiptronic automatic transmission and a Multitronic continuously variable transmission.

  • A petrol 1.8 TFSI rated at 160bhp power and 250Nm torque between 1500 and 4000 rpm. With a manual gearbox 0-100 kmph time is an 8.6 seconds and reaches a top speed of 225 km/h. Fuel efficiency is 14 kmpl. This engine can be ordered only on the front wheel drive option.
  • A petrol 3.2 FSI V6 producing 265 bhp and 330 Nm of torque between 3000 to 5000 rpm. 0-100 km/h takes 6.2 seconds and reaches a top speed of 250 km/h. Fuel efficiency is 10.8 kmpl. This engine can be ordered only with quattro permanent all wheel drive.
  • A diesel 3.0 TDI V6 with 240 bhp and 500 Nm from 1500 to 3000 rpm. 0-100 kmph in 6.1 seconds and top speed is 250 kmph. FE is 14.5 kmpl. Only with Quattro.
  • A diesel 2.7 TDI V6 with 190 bhp and 400 Nm between 1400 and 3250 rpm. 0-100 in 7.7 secs and top speed of 226 kmph. FE is 15.1 kmpl. Only front wheel drive
  • A diesel 2.0 TDI with 143 bhp and 320 Nm between 1750 and 2500 rpm. 0-100 in 9.4 and top speed 215 kmph. FE is 18.1 kmpl. Only FWD.

The new model will be available in Avant (station wagon) and S4 (sport) versions. The cabriolet convertible will be replaced by Audi A5 coupe for now. Audi says the car will be priced around 26,000 Euros in Germany which is about the same as the 2007 model if not cheaper and is expected to go on sale by the end of November.
