Maruti Suzuki new WagonR was first launched in 1993 in Japan. The WagonR made its Indian debut in 2001. Even though the car could not impress the Indian audience in the beginning, it gained quite some popularity later. And since then it has been one of the best selling cars for the company. Since its launch, Maruti Suzuki has sold 8.8 lakh units of the car in India and exported 5.5 lakh units to various countries.

In 2006, the WagonR got a facelift and the new Wagon R Duo, which could run on LPG apart from petrol, was launched. Now Maruti Suzuki has launched the BS IV compliant version of the WagonR. The new WagonR, also known as "The Blue-Eyed Boy" has got a lot improvements such as new features along with a new dynamic look. Right from the new K-series engine to stylish new interiors, Maruti Suzuki has done everything to impress the Indian crowd.

The new Maruti Suzuki WagonR is available in a range of attractive colours including Superior White, Midnight Black, Baker's Chocolate, Breeze Blue, Fire Brick Red, Silky Silver and Glistening Grey.

Powertrain & Performance

The all new WagonR comes in three variants, the LX, LXi and the high-end VXi. The new car gets its power from a 998cc three-cylinder K10B engine and this engine is coupled by a 5-speed manual transmission that provides smooth manoeuvring of the car. The BS IV compliant engine can stir up 67 bhp at 6200 rpm and a maximum torque of 90 Nm at 3900 rpm.

The new WagonR is economical and its performance is out of this world with a mileage of 18 kmpl. The cable type transmission and new frame-type suspension offer great stability on all terrains owing to the gas filled inside the setup which is very different from the oil filled older mechanism. The NVH levels are also enhanced. Maruti has reworked the front suspension to ensure the car handling gets better.

The new WagonR with a bold and aggressive stance looks more muscular when judged against its predecessor. It has a fresher and curvier look, the V-character line amplifying the car's athletic personality. The bigger and sweeping headlamps sparkle with the blue tint giving the car the feel of a superstar. The sloping roof, extra-wide bumpers broadening towards the corners and the blazing fenders only add to the agile looks of the blue-eyed boy.

The life-size obese doors help in easy and comfortable entry and exit. The power windows offer the required privacy. There is the chrome accentuation in the front and back with the WagonR brand engraved in chrome in the rear. The new car has enhanced rear visibility.

The new WagonR comes as a bighearted package with roomy interiors. The dual-tone interiors offer a soothing ambience with the 3-D fabric seats with 60:40 split rear seats. Silver accentuation all around is a treat to the eye. The new tilt steering wheel, ergonomic gear knob and the new speedometer design make driving less tiresome and keep the driver yearning for more and longer drives. The centre console the new design offers precise information.

The new WagonR has the best-in-class wheel base of 2400 mm which is over 40 mm more than the original WagonR. The legroom too is extremely generous compared to the rest in the segment. It comes with a distance of 100 mm more than its predecessor. The 240mm front seats offer a warm welcome to even tall users. The headroom is grand. The full-trim interiors including A, B and C pillar trims create an excellent ambience.

Coming to the functional add-ons in the new WagonR, the car has push-type cup holders with a utility hook and a brawny, deeper glove box with an incorporated shelf, a rear parcel tray and an integrated tool box. The car is eco-friendly with a utility basket just below the co-driver's seat making it loud and clear 'while I am here, do not throw waste out of the car'. There is a front door map pocket and soft inserts on the floor console to safeguard the cell-phone camera unit add a pinch of grace to the interiors.

The electrical outside rear view mirror (ORVM) offers great visibility. Keyless entry and foldable assist-grips are added features that the new WagonR sports. A new HVAC unit providing a temperature reduction of four degrees than the existing model comes in the face lifted version of the WagonR.

The new WagonR comes swarmed with safety features. The high-end variant includes ABS & dual airbags, rear defogger, wiper & washer, driver seat belt indicator and the immobilizer i-CATS (intelligent Computerized Anti-Theft system) security system take care of car, driver and passenger safety. For ultimate entertainment on the drive, the new WagonR comes with an integrated audio with AUX-in and 6-band graphic equalizer.

Maruti Alto is one of the incarnations of the a common platform, designed with the Japanese principles of kei-ji-dosha which strictly decide the dimensions a car must confirm to in order to be called a small car, in japan that is. As a matter of fact, it is the elder brother of the maruti 800. At one point of time, maruti was selling 3 versions of the maruti 800 here - the 800, Alto and the old Zen. All are different generations of same model.

Launched eight years ago, the Alto has displaced the M800 as Maruti's flagship company in the domestic market. Design & Interiors of New Maruti Alto

New Maruti Alto is based on the Wagon R's platform but has an identity of its own. It has a clean silhouette and a minimalist design minus any frippery. A chunky front bumper, a dashing front grille and a bold 'S' badge are among the new design cues on the front fascia. The ride quality of New Maruti Alto is pleasant and comfortable but handling does not exactly measure up. Steering is spongy at times. The stiff suspension of New Alto soaks up bumps quite well and Brakes are hugely responsive too. A stiff chassis gives the Alto its fabulous driving character.

New Alto's interiors are very basic with simple dashboard, with provision for the stereo in a very common position. New Alto gets dual tone treatment for the centre console. The controls for the air conditioning are the new design rotary type, with the sliding type controls found on the non-AC model. In Lx & Lxi cariants seat come in fabric and the quality is quite good and so are the colors and the graphics used. The doors of New Alto don't have map pockets at the side; neither is there a decent enough number of cup holders. The instrument cluster has a big white speedometer in centre flanked by the new digital fuel gauge and odometer.

The Alto is available in three variants - Maruti Alto Standard, Maruti Alto LX and Maruti Alto LXi. New Alto borrows from Maruti 800's tried and tested engine technology, therefore delivering optimal performance.It is a car with minimum number of problems - 93 per 100 vehicles in the B-segment according to JD Power Asia Pacific 2005 India awards.

Volkswagen Vento Price

Volkswagen Vento is new sedan based on newly launched VW polo platform and will feature same 1.6 litre petrol engine.

Main competitor for Vento is popular Honda city @ same price range and others like Chevrolet Optra Magnum and Toyota Corolla Altis. The drive, handling, interiors and exteriors of the VW Vento have been developed keeping in mind the Indian Conditions.

Neeraj Garg, director, Volkswagen Passenger Cars, Volkswagen Group Sales India, said: “The way we were competitive when we launched the hatchback (Polo), similarly, we will be competitive in terms of value proposition and impact segment with the sedan. We are a premium brand with premium products and do not intend to be in the price-sensitive segment.”

Vento will be available in Petrol and Diesel variant (Manual and automatic transmission) and will manufactured at Chakan, near Pune.

Volkswagen Vento Price in India: no official info…but it will cost you Rs. 9,00,000 to Rs. 12,00,000/- depend upon variant.
